What I Learned From Tracking My Money Every Single Day

In my last blog post, I wrote about how I came from a family that believed they were poor, and with ancestry that potentially came from actual poverty. So my relationship with money has been filled with stress, avoidance and fear.

About 2 months ago, I decided that I was sick of feeling scared about money, of fearing uncertainty and the overall mindset I had about it all. I enrolled in a free Money Mindset course, and one of the tasks was to track your income and expenses in all bank accounts for 21 days.

I'll tell you what I used to think before I looked at our income and expenses:

  • we spend way too much too often on unnecessary items

  • we don't earn enough money

  • accounting and budgeting is stressful and restrictive

  • we can't afford to pay for emergency expenses

  • we are poor

  • my business is in a deficit

  • we'll never own a house

Now here's what I learned throughout those 21 days:

  • the total amount of money we have changes ever so slightly every day

  • money goes out frequently in little increments

  • our income mostly pays for rent, food and savings

  • money always comes in and back in again

  • just because money hasn't come in for a while doesn't mean it won't ever come in again

  • we earn more than I realised

  • numbers aren't scary, numbers are just numbers. They're scary when we make them mean something

  • looking at the numbers makes me feel safe, because I know where the money is going

  • we always have money in abundance

  • money comes in expected and unexpected ways

  • I've profited in business consistently for the past 3 months

  • we are projected to have a 20% deposit on a home in the next year

  • budgeting and accounting is so important for financial wellness.

Now I still do my accounting for business every week day! And I have no fear over seeing the figures in my bank account, which is a huge milestone for me.

So lets take a moment to reflect. Where are you at right now? What feels most true for you and your mindset--the beliefs I had before I did the challenge, or the beliefs I learned after the challenge?

Try not to make this mean anything good or bad about you! It just is. What's more important is to ask: is that mindset working for you?

Do you feel calm and at ease with money? Do you feel safe and know that you always have enough money?

If your mindset isn't working for you, I want to congratulate you for being honest enough and aware enough to acknowledge that. It can be hard to do and most people won't admit it, which means that you have what it takes to create change in your life.

If you would like put that honesty and awareness to use to create change, to create ease, calm, safety and abundance with money, I gently invite you to reach out for a free 1:1 call with me. No obligations, no sales pitch. We'll see where you're at, what you need, what you desire, if there's any way I can support you and really just get to know each other more.
