I don’t agree with tearing other products or companies down to lift your own up
(even if that company is doing comparatively “evil” things).
I’m not a fan of cancel culture, I’m a fan of informed decision making.
And to me, your product or service is not better just because someone else’s standards are different.
You want people to buy from a confident, trusting place—this is how you not only secure repeat customers, this is how you build relationships, which is imperative for (a) being human (b) longevity of a business and (c) reputation.
Anything else—buying out of fear, uncertainty—will not last.
And we as consumers can feel it when businesses are just trying to make a sale or scare us away from others and towards them.
Let’s say you’re on a date, and another man comes up to you and says, “You know, I saw him on his phone while you were talking. You know that’s not good for a relationship right? Well I would never do that to you. Ditch him tonight and come with me instead…”
And if you’re still not convinced, he continues to find ways to put your date down whilst talking himself up.
And he's not even showing you that he is all these wonderful things he claims to be, he's simply telling you and hoping you'll trust him (after he just spent half of your conversation bagging some other guy out).
How does that make you feel?
A bit creeped out? Confused? Polarised? Like you want him to just leave you the fuck alone, even if he’s right?
THAT is how consumers feel when we as business owners use what is essentially fear, defamation and bullying to bring in customers.
Do we want our customers to feel coerced? No! We want them to believe in what we’ve got to sell from a genuine place, we want them to love what we do so much that they have no hesitations about booking a service with us, we want them to be empowered in their decisions to work with us, we want them to trust us.
THAT is the culture I try to build.
And whilst scare tactics and belittling others may make more money in the business world, that’s not a world I’m willing to create nor contribute to any more.
So--as a consumer and/or a business owner--what will you choose to invest in and contribute to the world?
Greed or Integrity?
Fear or Trust?
Uncertainty or Empowerment?
The choice is yours.
At a bare minimum as a consumer, now that you are aware, you won't be falling for scarcity-based sales pitches or manipulated into purchases that you don't really want or need.
